Bones are...?   dense connective tissue composed of mainly calcium and phosphate  
How many bones are in the body?   206  
List the functions of bones: (6 in total)   Protection, support, surfaces for muscle/ligament/tendon attachment, movement, production of RBCs, and the storage of 99% of the calcium in the body.  
Axial skeleton includes:   80 bones from the head and torso (including the 6 from the middle ear)  
Appendicular skeleton includes:   126 bones from the body's extremities.  
The skull contains:   28 bones  
Mandible   only moveable bone of the skull  
Sutures   Immobile joints that hold the skull together  
Coronal suture holds together what?   divides and holds together the frontal bone from the parietal bone.  
Lambdoid suture holds together what?   holds the parietal bones to the occipital bone.  
Sinuses   air-filled spaces within the skull that decrease the weight of bones, moisten incoming air, and resonate voice.  
What is the foramen magnum?   large opening at the base of the skull that lets the spinal cord through.  
What do the maxillary bones form?   upper jaw, the nose, the orbits (eye sockets), the roof of the mouth, and the maxillary sinuses.  
The zygomatic is also know as the?   cheek bones  
The nasal bones form the?   upper part of the nose.  
The mandible forms the?   lower jaw.  
At what age does the anterior fontanel close?   10-18 months
