Asthenopia   Vague eye discomfort arising from use of the eyes. May consist of eye strain, headache, and/or browache. May be related to uncorrected refractive error or poor fusional amplitude.

Astigmatism   Inability of the eye to focus sharply (at any distance), usually resulting from a spoon-like (toric) shape of the normally spherical corneal surface.

Atrophy   Wasting away or loss of function of cells, tissue, or an organ

Bedewing   Swelling and clouding of superificial layers of the cornea, causing loss of surface smoothness, which reduces its image-forming properties. May be caused by prolonged increase in intra-occular or by contact lens over-wear.

Binocular Vision   Blending of the separate images seen by each eye into one composite image.

Blepharitis   Inflammation of the eyelids, usually with redness, swelling, and itching. Many causes e.g. infection/allergy

Blepharoconjuctivitis   Inflammation of the conjunctiva

Blepharoplasty   Any plastic surgery of the eyelids, usually cosmetic

Blepharoptosis   Drooping of the upper eyelid. May be congential or caused by paralysis or weakness of 3rd (oculumotor) cranial nerve, or sympathetic nerves, or by the excessive weight of the upper lids.

Blepharospasm   Sudden, involuntary spasm of the orbicularis oculi muscle, producing uncontrolled blinking.

Blindness   Inability to see

Bulbar   Refers to the eyeball

Canaliculus   Tiny channel in each eyelid that forms part of the tear drainage system.

Canthus   Angle formed by the inner or outer junction of the upper and lower eyelids.

Caruncle   Pink, fleshy conjuctival tissue in the nasal corner of each eye over the semilunar fold.  
🗑
Cataract   Opacity or cloudiness of the crystalline lens, which may prevent a clear image from forming on the retina.  
🗑
Central Visual Acuity   Eyes best vision, used for reading and distinguishing detail and color.
