reference map | a map that shows the geographic locations of places. These kinds of maps usually display boundaries, codes of geographic areas and their names. They also show physical and cultural features that may include roads, rivers, lakes and coastlines.

thematic map | a map, much like all of the maps you would see, except that it is unique in what it shows. It will have a main theme, such as weather conditions, or even hotel coverage.
