Matter   Anything that has volume and mass.

Volume   The amount of space taken up by an object.

Weight   Measure of gravitational force exerted on an object. Varies depending on nearness to a large object and that object's mass. Expressed in Newtons.

Newton   A measurement of force.

Inertia   The tendency of objects to resist change in motion.

Physical property   Can be observed without changing the identity of matter.

Density   The amount of matter in a given volume: D=m/v

Chemical property   Describe a substance based on its ability to change into a new substance with different properties. Ex.: Wood can burn.

Physical change   A change in physical properties of a substance. Ex.: Breaking something in two or melting or dissolving something.

Chemical change   When one or more substances change into new substances with new properties. Ex.: When wood burns, it changes to smoke and ash.
