Multiplicative inverse   Another name for reciprocal. When you multiply a number by this you get 1.

Equation   A expression that states two things are the equal. It uses an equals sign.

Additive inverse   What you add to a number to get zero. The negative of a number.

Isolate   To move pieces of the equation around so that the variable is alone and positive.

Division property   The same number is divided by both sides of the equation.

Deduce   Arrive at (a fact or a conclusion) by reasoning; draw as a logical conclusion.

Multiplication property   The same number is multiplied on both sides of the equation.

Literal equation   An equations that is made up of only variables.

Distributive property   Multiply a number by a group of numbers. The jumping property.

variable   A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y.

corresponding   Angles or sides that appear in the same place in two similar situations.

percent   Part per 100.

rational number   Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another. The word comes from "ratio".

equivalent fraction   Fractions that have the same value, even though they may look different.

rate   A quantity, amount, or degree of something measured per unit of something else. Example: 80 words per minute.

ratio   Compares values of different things such as boys to girls or desks to chairs.

unit rate   The ratio of two measurements in which the second term is 1.

conversion factor   A unit used to multiply or divide a quantity when converting from one system of units to another – such as inches to yards.

similar   These two shapes are this when one is smaller and/or flipped over, but otherwise the same.
