What is the demographic transformation model?   The model assumes an initial period of rural life with high BR & DR & no pop. growth. With increased prod. & improved sani, DR declines creating rapid pop. growth. As pop becomes more urbanized BR declines until low BR and DR prevail & pop doesnt grow

Stage I   Birth rates and death rates are high, creating a stable or very slowly growing population. Productivity per person is limited, life expectancy is low, security depends on family members, and employments opportunities stay inside agriculture.

Stage II   Cultural custom of large families still exist and birth rates remain high. Death rates drop drastically due to better living conditions and productivity. With industry comes urbanization. The key feature is rapid population increase.

Stage III   Characterized by continued urbanization, industrialization, and other economic trends. Birthrate drops rapidly, smaller families become more relevant. Kids are viewed as an economic liability. The population continues to grow but at an ever-slowing pace.

Stage IV   Finds the population growth rate stable or increasing very slowly. Birth and death rates are low. Pop is urbanized and birth control is widely practiced.

Population-doubling time   When the relative growth rate (not the absolute growth rate) is constant, the quantity undergoes exponential growth and has a constant doubling time or period which can be calculated directly from the growth rate.

Who was Thomas Malthus, and why was he such a depressing guy?   Welsh economist in the 1790s who had a very narrow perspective of population growth. He forecast-ed the doom & gloom of overpopulating the Earth.

What do neo-Malthusians believe?   These are the present-day advocates of Malthus. They think the population/production crisis has merely been delayed,and disaster may yet strike. They believe the Earths population is stripping away all resources.
