| Polling Place | The place where the voters who live in a certain precinct go to vote.

| Independent | A term used to describe people who have no party affiliation.

| Nomination | The process of candidate selection in an electoral system.

| Ward | A unit into which cities are often divided for the election of city council members.

| Absentee Ballot | A ballot cast by a voter other than in-person on election day. Some jurisdictions use the term synonymous with mailed ballots while other jurisdictions use the term synonymous with early voting.

| Audio Ballot | A ballot in which a set of offices is presented to the voter in spoken form.

| Straw Poll | An ad hoc or unofficial vote. It is used to show the popular opinion on a certain matter.

| Run-Off | Election to select a winner following a primary or a general election in which no candidate in the contest received the required minimum percentage of the votes cast.

| Recall Process | Process that allows voters to remove elected representatives from office prior to the expiration of their terms of office.
