radicand   The value inside the radical sign. The value you want to take the root of.

inverse   The opposite of a number

absolute value   How far a number is from zero.

reciprocal   If you multiply a number by this you get 1. Also called the multiplicative inverse.

multiplicative inverse   Another name for reciprocal. When you multiply a number by this you get 1.

distribute   - to give or deliver (something) to people - to deliver (something) to a store or business - to divide (something) among the members of a group

term   * a single number, or * a variable, or * numbers and variables multiplied together.

like terms   Terms whose variables (and their exponents) are the same.

coefficient   A number used to multiply a variable

constant   A number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number.

distributive property   Multiply a number by a group of numbers. The jumping property.

equation   A expression that states two things are the equal. It uses an equals sign.

open sentence   A mathematical statement that can be either true or false depending what values are used.

inductive reasoning   Making a conclusion based on an established pattern

radical   An expression that has a square root, cube root, etc. The symbol is √
