The Communication Circle:   A message, a source, a receiver

The source:   Sends the message

Messages are usually:   Verbal, nonverbal or written

Feedback:   The patient's response or feedback is verbal or nonverbal evidence that the receiver got and understood the message.

Noise:   Anything that changes the message in any way or interferes with the communication process.

Basic needs:   Physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem  
🗑
Physiological needs:   Are humans very basic needs, such as, air, water, food, sleep and sex. When not satisfied we may feel sick, irritated, pain and discomfort. These feelings motivate us to alleviate them as soon as possible to establish homeostasis.

Self-actualization:   Finding self-fulfillment and realizing your potential.  
🗑
Positive verbal communication:   1.Listening carefully, 2.Looking directly at patient when speaking to them, 3.Smiling, 4.Encouraging patients to ask questions

Negative verbal communication:   1.Mumbling, 2.Avoiding eye contact, 3.Treating patients rudely, 4.Showing boredom

Nonverbal communication:   Is also known as body language  
🗑
Listening Skills:   Listening involves both hearing and interpreting a message.  
🗑
Passive listening:   Simply hearing what someone has to say without need for a response.  
🗑
Active listening:   Involves two-communication. You are actively involved in the process, offering feedback & asking questions.

Interpersonal skills:   When you interact with people.  
🗑
Interpersonal skills include:   1.Empathy, 2.Respect, 3.Consideration  
🗑
Defense mechanisms:   1.Compensation, 2.Denial, 3.Projection, 4.Repression  
🗑
Compensation:   Overemphasizing a trait to make up for a perceived failing  
🗑
Denial:   An unconscious attempt to reject feelings, needs, etc.  
🗑
Projection:   Projecting onto another one's own feelings  
🗑
Repression:   Putting unpleasant thoughts, feelings or events out of one's own mind.  
🗑
Personal space:   An area that surrounds an individual. By not intruding on someone's personal space, you show respect for them.
