Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers

Compensation   Choosing numbers close to the numbers in a problem, and then adjusting the answer to compensate for the numbers chosen.

Commutative Property of Addition   Numbers can be added in any order and the sum remains the same.

Associative Property of Addition   Addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same.

Inverse Operations   Two operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations.

Estimate   To make an approximate or rough calculation, often based on rounding.

Identity Property of Addition   Any number added to zero (0) will give that number as the sum.

Reasonable   An answer that makes sense and can be proven.

Unreasonable   An answer that does NOT make sense and can't be proven.

Regrouping   Rearranging the formation of a group. For example: a group of 10 ones can be formed into 1 ten.

Whole Number   Any number between 0 and infinity that DOES NOT contain a fraction or a decimal.
