Exudate   A material that has escaped from blood vessels during the inflammatory process. It is deposited in tissue or on tissue surfaces and is usually present in a wound.

Serous exudate   An exudate which consists chiefly of serum. The drainage is clear and watery. ex: blister.

Sanguineous exudate   An exudate that is red and consists of RBCs. When capillaries are damaged, RBCs escape and is frequently seen in open wounds. Bright-red indicates fresh bleeding and dark-red indicates older bleeding.

Purulent exudate   An exudate that contains pus. This drainage is usually thick and has an unpleasant odor. It's white but may have tinges of pink, green, or yellow.

Suppuration   The process of pus formation.

Serosanguineous exudate   A clear and blood- tinged drainage and is commonly seen in surgical incisions.

Purosanguineous exudate   An exudate that consists of pus and blood and is often seen in a new wound that is infected.
