Chanak Crisis, 1922   British sent troops to Turkey to reaffirm ownership of Chanak. Turkey could have access to the Black Sea and Mediterranean. PM King said Canadian Parliament would decide whether to send troops. First time Canada refused unconditional support for Britain.

Imperial Conference, 1926   Made known that Canada was in no way subordinate to Great Britain

Balfour Report   Acknowledged that that the dominions within the British Empire were independent communities, and that the Canadian Governor General was only a representative of the British Monarch

Statute of Westminster,1931   Lawfully recognized the Balfour Report which made Canada autonomous. Specified that dominions were allowed to make their own laws

British Common Wealth of Nations   Association of the former colonies of Britain. Were treated as free and equal states: membership based on allegiance to the Crown. Canada joined December 11, 1931

Red Scare   Fear of Communism: peaople feared that the strikes and trade unions were the beginning of a Communist revolution. Anyone in posession of Communist literature would be arrested

Trade Unions   Organizations of workers that demanded better pay, working conditions, improved housing, and imporved job training programs.

Collective Bargaining   Process in which employers bargain or negotiate with employee representatives.

Bloody Saturday   June 21, 1919: crowd gathers to watch parade protesting the arrest of the Winnipeg Strike leaders. They set a streetcar on fire, and the RCMP charged. One man killed, 30 injured, and hundreds arrested
