Capsule   Drug contained in a gelatin capsule that's water-soluble and prevents the patient from tasting the drug.

Sustained- release capsule   A capsule that contains granules that dissolve at different rates for continuous release of the medication.

Caplet   A drug contained in an oblong tablet with a smooth coating, easy for swallowing.

Lozenge   Contained in a candylike base; circular and dissolves on the tongue.

Cream   Combined in a base that's generally non-greasy; applied externally to the skin.

Ointment   A drug with an oil base; applied externally to the skin and generally greasy.

Suppository   Mixed with a firm base that's designed to melt at body temperature; shaped into a cylinder or cone for easy insertion into a body cavity.

Transdermal patch   A patch with an adhesive backing, applied to the skin; the drug enters the circulation after being absorbed through the skin.

Elixir   A drug dissolved in a solution of alcohol or water; sweetened and flavored; taken orally.
