Boxer Rebellion   An uprising in China in 1900, spurred by angry Chinese militants or Boxers, over foreign control. Several hundred Europeans, Christians and Chinese died.

Mao Zedong   Under the leadership of Mao in 1949, the Communist finally defeated the Nationalist, ruling Mainland China. Chiang and the Nationalist fled to Taiwan.

Family Policy   In 1979, China adopted the policy of one child per family.

Pacific Rim   An economic and social region including the countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean, extending clockwise from New Zealand in the western Pacific to Chile in the eastern Pacific and including the west coast of the U.S.

Economic Tiger   A country with rapid economic growth due to cheap labor, high technology and aggressive exports. Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea are considered economic tigers.
