What is a PRIME NUMBER?   The only factors of a prime number are 1 and itself   The only factors of 13 are 1 and 13. 13 is a prime number.

What is a COMPOSITE NUMBER?   A composite number has more factors than just 1 and itself.   8 has more factors than just 1 and itself. For example, 2 is a factor of 8: 8 ÷ 2 = 4 8 is a composite number.

What are FACTORS?   Factors are the numbers you multiply together to get another number   3 and 4 are factors of 12, because 3x4=12. Also 2x6=12 so 2 and 6 are also factors of 12, and 1x12=12 so 1 and 12 are factors of 12 as well. So ALL the factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6 and 12

What does DIVISIBLE mean?   When one number can be divided by another and the result is an exact whole number.   15 is divisible by 3, because 15 ÷ 3 = 5 exactly 15 is divisible by 3, because 15 ÷ 3 = 5 exactly But 9 is not divisible by 2 because 9 ÷ 2 is 4 with 1 left over. But 9 is not divisible by 2 because 9 ÷ 2 is 4 with 1 left over.

What is a PRODUCT?   The answer when two or more numbers are multiplied together.   15 is the product of 3 x 5 3 x 5 = 15

What is a SQUARE NUMBER?   A square number is the product of a number multiplied b itself   9 = 3 x 3 ( 9 is a square number because it is the product of 3 x3.)

What is an EXPONENT?   The exponent of a number shows you how many times the number is to be used in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.   2 8 = 8 × 8 = 64

What is a FACTOR TREE?   A graphical representation showing the factors of a composite number.   36 6 x 6 3 x 2 3 x 2

What is PRIME FACTORIZATION?   A prime factorization shows how to write a number as the product of prime factors.   What are the prime factors of 15? Divide by prime factors until the quotient is 1. 15 ÷ 3 = 5 5 ÷ 5 = 1 The prime factorization of 15 is: 15 = 3 × 5
