antagonist the person, thing, or force that works against the protagonist, or main character, of a work

plot the action or sequence of events in a story-exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution
conflict the problem that triggers the action

setting time and place in which the action of a literary work occurs
theme the statement about life that the author wants to convey to the reader
character a person, animal, or imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a story
static character stays the same throughout the story
dynamic character changes from the beginning to the end of a story
characterization techniques an author uses to develop the personallity of a character in a literary work-appearance, personality, speech, behavior, thoughts, feelings, and interactions with other characters
dialogue words spoken by characters in a literary work
dialect a form or language that is spoken in a particular place or by a particular group of people
genre category of type of literature
symbol a person, place, thing, or event used to represent somethng else
first-person point of view told by a one of the characters
third-person point of view told by a narrator who stands outside the story and observes the events as they unfold
