| clincal manifestations | HIGH fever, initial croupy cough, progressive stridor, airway compromise, purulent (pus) secretions , general lethargy |
| tx | dx confirmed by BLD CLUTURE often misdiagnosed early as LTB, Antibiotics- staphylococcus sensitive, IV fluids, oxygen |
| nursing care focus | ongoing AIRway assessment and support, airway maintenance keep secretions Liqufied suction as needed have resuscitation equipment ready, monitor for oxygenation, keep sats greater tha 93%, assess for work of breathing position FLAT to conserve energy |
| meds | antibiotics, antipyrectics; the rapid changes in temp causes febrile seizures, analgesics(non narcotics ONLY) |
| family support and prog | shildren are v. ill and most will need artificial airways and ventilatory support, children with resp distress need their conscious effort to breathe |
