Plate Tectonics

continental drift Old theory that earth's continents have moved over time.
Alfred Wegener Scientist who came up with the theory of continental drift.
plate tectonics The theory of the formation and movement of the plates that cover the Earth's surface.
lithospheric plate A rigid, but moving, piece of the Earth's surface.
divergent boundary A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other.
convergent boundary A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other.
transform boundary A plate boundary where two plates slide past each other.
seafloor spreading The process by which new ocean floor is being created at divergent plate boundaries.
subduction The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath less dense crust at a convergent plate boundary.
trench Deep oceanic valley that forms where oceanic plates are subducting.
mid-ocean ridge Underwater chain of mountains that forms at divergent plate boundaries.
Pangaea The name of a single landmass that broke apart 225 million years ago.
mantle layer of hot solid material beneath Earth's crust and core.
lithosphere The rigid layer of earth made up of the uppermost part of the mantle and crust.
