QuestionAnswer
Tariff of Abominations of 1828 South supported large protective rates for manufactured products and North would pay high rates for raw products. The South hoped that Congress would vote against this bill, but it passed
Result of Tariff of Abominations Talks about boycotting North's goods; refusal to obey the new tariff law was considered; question the value of remaining a Union; deeper rift between North and South
Calhoun, Hayne, and Davis 4 points - Constitution Constitution is a compact (an agreement) among several sovereign states
Calhoun, Hayne, and Davis 4 points- fed. gov. power Federal gov. has only those powers delegated to it by the Constitution (Tenth Amendment)
Calhoun, Hayne, and Davis 4 points- withdraw Constitution did not mention about power to nullify a law of Congress, or about the right of state to withdraw from the Union. All powers not denied to thte states and not granted tot he fed. gov. belong to the states (10th Amend.)
The reason Calhoun gave to declare the tariff was unconstitutional tariff was a tax. The Constitution says that taxes may be levied for only three purposes; to pay the public debt; to provide for the commond defense; and to promote the general welfare. Tariff does not do any of these 3 things so it is unconsititutional
