URINARY SYSTEM function is: maint. of homeostasis by removal of waste products
The US maintains homeostasis by controlling the composition & volumn of blood
controlling blood is done by: removing and restoring selected amts of water & solutes
US = URINARY SYS aka EXCRETORY SYSTEM
The primary function of US is removal of waste
metabolic process of body cells prod.: various by products incl: toxic nitrogenous wastes
By-products producted by US are: ammonia & urea from the catabolism of proteins
What accumulates in excess: essential ions
essential ions that accumulate are: sodium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate and hydrogen
Organs of US are: pair of kidneys, 2 ureters, bladder and urethra
describe kidneys: paired , reddish, kidney bean shape
Kidneys are loc. above waist: between the parietal peritoneum & the postier wall of abdomen
RETROPERITONEAL means: behind peritoneum
another way to describe kidney loc is: between 12 thoracic & 3rd lumbar vertebrae
which kidney is lower: right
why is one kidney lower: due to lg area of liver
avg adult kidney is: 4-5 long, 2-3 wide, & 1" thick
HILUS is: an indentation on concave side
Hilus is exit point for: ureter
Hilus in entry/exit for: BV's, LV's & nerves
Hilus is entry to a cavity called: RENAL SINUS
Describe RENAL PELVIS: flat, funned shaped tube
renal pelvis is continous w/ ureter
What surrounds each kidney: 3 layers of tissue
tissue layers surrounding kidney are: RENAL CAPSULE, ADIPOSE CAPSULE, & RENAL FASCIA
The renal capsule - describe smooth, transparent, fiberous; immermost layer
renal capsule is continous with: outer coat of the ureter at the hilus
renal capsule acts as a barrier against trauma & infection
ADIPOSE CAPSULE describe a mass of fatty tissue surrounding the renal capsule
The adipose capsule provides: protection for trauma
The RENAL FASCIA -describe: outermost layer, thin layer of fibrous CT
What renal fascia does for kidney: anchors to surrounding structures & adbominal wall
The renal fascia also: surrounds & anchors adrenal glands
PARENCHYMA of kidney formed by: CORTEX & MEDULLA
RENAL CORTEX desc: smooth, textured area
Cortex extends from the: renal capsule to the base of pyramids
RENAL COLUMNS are: extensions of cortex-fingers into medulla
