The GONADS include: OVARIES & TESTES
GONADS are glands that: produce both hormones and gametes
OVARIES - ESTROGENS: Used for the production of ova & progesterone & for maint of ova
Relaxin is an additional: female hormone
TESTES-TESTOSTERONE: which is used to create male body features & also for the production of sperm
Testes also produce: INHIBIN, which inhibits secretion of FSH
INHIBIN slows the: production of sperm cells
Pineal Gland-Gleal cells: attached to rood of third ventricle
PINEALOCYTES: secretory cells of the pineal gland
Pineal gland produces: MELATONIN
The BIOLOGICAL CLOCK is regulated by: melatonin
SCN (SUPRACHIASMATIC NUCLEI): a pair of nuclei associated w /the biological clock mechanism;
The SCN is located: One of these nuclei is present in each hemisphere, just behind & below the eyes
Melatonin is produced from: the neurotransmitter SEROTONIN; it may play a role in sleep
The Pineal gland possibly produces: other hormones - still unsure
Thymus Gland is large at: birth and kicks into full gear during childhood
Describe thymus gland: bilobed lymphatic structure located in superior mediastinum.
Thymus is postier to: sternum & between the lungs.
Thymus gland produces: T-cells & hormones
Hormones produced by thymus: 3 THYMOSINS, THYMIC HUMORAL FACTOR (THF) AND THYMOPOIETIN
Not members but some endocrine functions are: GI tract, Placenta, Heart, Kidneys & Skin
GI Tract produces: 4 stomach gastrin, enteric (intestinal) gastrin, secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK)
Stomach gastrin is produced: by stomach in response to undigested protein
Enteric gastrin produced by: duodenum in response to undigested protein. Named because it mimics activity of stomach gastrin
Secretin is produced by: duodenum. Stimulates the release of pancreatic buffers into the lumen of the small intestine
Cholecystokinin (CKK) AKA PANCREOZYMIN; produced by duodenum;
What stimulates the gall bladder: cholecytokinin
Placenta is part of: life support sys for unborn
Human chorionic gonadotropin: what they check for on a pregnancy test
Placenta also includes: estrogens, progesterone and relaxin
