Heredity & Genetics

Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring
genetics The scientific study of heredity
trait A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes
gene The genetic material that carries information about an organism and that is passed from parent to offspring
sexual reproduction The reproductive process that involves two parents who combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents
asexual reproduction The production of offspring by a single parent, which results in a genetic copy (or duplicate) of that parent
alleles The different forms of a gene
dominant allele An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present
recessive allele An allele that is masked when a dominant allele is present
