Acid Rain Unit

Acid Precipitation precipitation such as rain, sleet, or snow, or fog that contains a high amount of acids due to pollution
PH (power of hydrogen) A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is
Acid shock the sudden runoff of large amounts of highly acidic water into lakes and streams when snow melts in the spring or when heavy rains occur
Acidification increase in the concentration of acid, changes the balance of a soil's chemistry
Canada-US Air Quality Agreement- 1991 agreement b/w both countries to reduce acidic emissions that flow across the US/Canada boundary
Sulfuric Acid sulfur oxides combine with water in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid, a form of acid rain
Nitric Acid Nitrogen oxides from pollution combine with water in the atmosphere to form nitic acid, a form of acid rain
Carbonic Acid Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere combines with water in the atmosphere to form carbonic acid
Acid substance with a ph lower than 7.0
Base a substance with a ph greater than 7.0
Neutral a substance with a ph of 7
pH scale each whole number on the scale indicates a ten fold change in activity
