What three major abiotic factors affect marine ecosystems? 1. temp of water 2. amount of sunlight 3. depth
What is the major abiotic factor affecting freshwater ecosystems? speed of the water
What is permafrost? a layer of permanently frozen soil found in the tundra
What is the difference between polar and alpine tundra? polar = near the poles and alpine = near the treeline up a mountain
What is another name for the coniferious forest? Taiga
Which biome do we live in? Decidious Forest
What is the intertidal zone? This zone is in marine ecosystems where the water meets the land. 1/2 land 1/2 water
Name the three ocean zones based on temperature. Surface zone ( 0-300 meters) Thermocline (301 - 700 meters), Deep zone ( 701 meters and below

About what percent of the planet is covered in water? 3/4
Another name for the coniferous forest? Taiga
The name of the biome we live in? Deciduous Forest
These two biomes receive the LEAST amount of precipitation desert and tundra
This biome receives the LARGEST amount of precipitation rain Forest
Two types of tundra are: Polar and alpine tundra
what is special about evergreen trees? they stay green all year long/keep their needles throughout the winter
What does "deciduous" mean? to fall off
The 4 levels of the rain forest are emergent, canopy, understory, forest floor
What is biodiversity? The variety of species in an area
Which biome has the highest biodiversity? Rainforest
In which biome due animals make adaptations to adapt to the harsh weather such as being active at night? desert
