Terms and definitions

Chemistry The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
Physical Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into something else
Chemical Property A characteristic that is observed when a substance changes into a different substance
Element An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means
Physical Change Alters the form or appearance of a material but does not convert the material into new substances
Chemical Change A change in matter that forms one or more new substances
Compound A substance made of two or more elements that are chemically bound together in a set ratio
Mixture Two or more substances in the same place that are not chemically combined
Atom The smallest unit of an element
Proton A positively charged particle found in the nucleus (or center) of an atom
Atomic Number The number of protons in an atom
Mass Number The number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Molecule A particle made of two or more atoms
Electron A negatively charged particle which orbits(moves around) the nucleus of an atom
Neutron A particle with no charge which is also found in the nucleus of an atom
