cells - Major
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cell | Basic unit of structure and function in living things |
| organelles | tiny cell structures that have particular jobs in a cell - "carry out specific functions within the cell |
| cell wall | rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. |
| cell membrane | forms the outside boundary that separates the cell from its environment. Mainly controlls what substances come into and out of a cell. |
| nucleus | the "brain" of the cell - directs all the cells activities |
| nucleur membrane | protects the nucleus, controls what enters and leaves the nucleus |
| chromatin | strands that contain genetic material that instruct the direct function of the cell - determines what kind of cell it is |
| cytoplasm | thick gel-like fluid (think jello!) where organelles are found. It's located between the cell membrane and the nucleus |
| mitochondria | the cells "powerhouse" produces most of the energy the cell needs to carry out its function. |
| chloroplasts | organells tha capture sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell |
| vacuole | the cells "storage" plant cells have larger vacuoles than animal cells |
| selective permeability | the cell membrane is selectively permeable: it allows some materials to pass through it,but does not allow others to pass through it. |
