What is the drug for biophosponates? alendronate
Which calcium supplement has the highest percent of calcium? Which supplement is better absorbed? Calcium carbonate has the highest percentage, Calcium citrate is best absorbed.
How much calcium does a postmenopausal woman need? 2. Postmenopausal women who do NOT take estrogen need at least 1500 mg of supplemental calcium; those who DO take estrogen need at least 1000 mg.
Which diuretic can be given to treat hypercalemia? loop diuretic, lasix
What are the uses of estrogen? replacement therapy, birth control, relief of menopause symptoms

What can you buy over the counter for building muscles? Androstenedione and DHEA. However, they may have more of a feminizing effect on the muscles.
What are some types of drugs that can be used to treat cancer? cytotoxic agents and hormone inhibitors
Who should be administering cytotoxic drugs? only nurses that are certified to do so
What are the adverse effects of cytotoxic drugs? hematologic, GI, dematologic and renal effects, also suppresses the immune system
What is the goal of cytotoxic antineoplastic drugs? cure, relieve symptoms or maintain remission
How do biologic targeted drgus fight cancer? by stimulating the immune system or inhibiting processes that allow cancer cells to proliferate.
What are some adverse effects of hormone inhibitors? hot flashes, heart failure, neuropathy
Biologic response modifiers hematologic and immunostimulant agents which are used to stimulate the immune system.
What are two biologic response modifiers? interferons and interleukins
What is an autoimmune disease and give two examples? The pt's own immune system attacks the pt's tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis
What is used to treat autoimmune disorders? Immunosuppressants
What is used to prevent/treat rejection of transplanted tissue? Immunosuppressants
What is the effect of corticosteroids on the immune system? Corticosteroids suppresses the immune system
When you have a pt on immunodilators, BRMs and corticosteroids what do you need to monitor for? Signs of infection
What do thyroid hormones do? Increase metabolism, Increase heart rate and decrease secretion of TSH
Why may propranolol be given to a person with hyperthyroidism? To reduce tachycardia
before giving levothyroxine, what should you assess? Pulse. If pulse is over 100, talk to the doctor before giving.
