adipocytes the cells that primarily compose adipose tissue (connective tissue that insulates the body), specializing in storing energy as fat.
archenteron The endoderm-lined cavity, formed during gastrulation, that develops into the digestive tract of animals
axon A typically long extention, or process, of a neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body toward target cells.
basal lamina A layer of extracellular matrix found on the basal surface of epithelial cells, and which is secreted by the epithelial cells. The basal lamina is composed of lamina densa and lamina lucida, and is only visable under electron microsope.
basement membrane extracellular matrix characteristically found under epithelial cells. Composed of basal lamina and reticular lamina.
blastocoel The fluid-filled cavity that forms in the centre of a blastula
blastula A hollow ball of cells that marks the end of the cleavage stage during early embryonic development in animals.
