Sentences

Simple, Compound, Complex, Phrases, and Clauses

QuestionAnswer
A Complete Sentence that always contains 1 independent clause and at least 1 subordinate/dependent clause Complex Sentence
A group of words that does not make a complete thought. It does not have to have a subject and a verb. Phrase
A group of words that contain a subject and a verb. Clause
Has a subject and a verb, is a complete thought, and can stand by itself. Independent Clause
Can have a subject and a verb, but is not a complete thought and cannot stand by itself. Dependent Clause
A sentence that has 1 independent clause and no dependent/subordinate clause. Simple Sentence
A sentence that has 2 independent clauses, sometimes joined by a FANBOYS conjunction. Compound Sentence
