| jurisdiction | power of a court to hear a case - 2 kinds, federal and state - federal has authority over state in questions involving federal law (page 9) |
| precedent | a published opinion of an appellate court that serves as authority for determining a legal question in a later case with similar facts (page 5) |
| statutory law | law enacted by local and state legislative bodies and by Congress (page 7) |
| trial court | determines the facts of a case and applies relevant laws to these facts (page 8) |
