Round character Many personality traits,very human like
Cliche An expression used so often that it has lost its freshness and effectiveness
Static character character(s)changes throughout the story, personality remains the same
Antagonist The person or force that works against the hero of the story
Flat character primarily one personality trait ex:joker-evil
Direct characterization author provides information directly in print
Inderect characterization Not direct; reader "figures out" the personality/information from characters words and actions
Dynamic character character (s) changes throughout the story, emotionally /physically grows
Point of View Perspective from which the story is told
Atmosphere The emotional quality or mood of a story
Symbol Person,place,or thing that represents something most often something concrete or tangible that represents an abstract idea
Satire Writing tht comments on human flaws,ideas,social customs.or institutions in order to change theme
Suspense A feeling of excitement,curiosity or expectation about what will happen
Style The distinctive way that a writer uses language including factors as word choice,sentence length, arangement,& complexity, & the use of figurative language & imagery
Third person omniscent narrator can see into the minds of all characters
Third Person narrator outside the story; uses he,she, they
Third person limited narrator tells only one character perseives
First person narrator is a character in the story uses "I',"we" etc.
Hyperbole a purpuseful exxageration for emphasis or humor and also a figure of speech ex:his mind was a million miles away"
Onomatopoeia the use of words that imitate sounds like hiss,buzz, etc.
Oxymoron A figure of sppech where author groups contradictory terms to suggest a paradox ex:"jumbo shrimp"
Allusion A refrence to a well-known person,place,event, literacy work or art to enrich reading experiench by adding meaning
Allegory A narrative in which objects,persons, or events are symbolic for qualities or things not directly included in the narrative itself.Usally deals with a moral thruth or generalization about human existence
Exposition Part of story usally at begining where characters are introduced background & setting explained
Analogy A comparisson of ideas or objects which are essentially diffrent but which are alike in one significant way,ex:grasshoper & the man who lives only for a momment
Protaginist main character , usally heroic, good type
Mood feeling intended for reader to feel in a literature
Characterization Techniques a writer uses to create &develop a character by what he says & does or other characters say or react to them
