QuestionAnswer
digestive system consists of digestive tract (a tube extending from the mouth to the anus) and its accessory organs
Digestive tract is also called alimentary tract or alimentary canal
gastrointestinal tract (G.I.) technically only refers to the stomach and intestines Note - it is often used as a synonym for the digestive tract
regions of the digestive tract include (7) 1. Oral cavity 2. pharynx or throat 3. esophagus 4. stomach 5. small intestine 6. large intestine 7. anus
functions of the digestive system (8) 1. Ingestion 2. mastication 3. propulsion 4. mixing 5. secretion 6. digestion 7. absoprtion 8. elimination
ingestion take in food - normally, through mouth [also-nasogastric tube]
mastication Chewing - solid foods must be broken down
propulsion Movement of food - takes 24-35 hours; each segment is specialized to move its contents from oral end to anal end
Deglutition Swallowing [L. de-glutio "swallowing"]
peristalsis Peri "around" stalsis "constriction"
peristalsis muscular contractions in digestive organs occur in peristaltic waves; these open in front of the food, then squeeze from behind
mass movements contractions that extend over much larger parts of the digetive tract than peristaltic movements
mixing - food and secretions food is moved back & forth to MIX it with digestive secretions & help break it into smaller pieces
segmental contractions mixing contractions that occur in the small intestine
secretions have what purpose (name four) lubricate, liquefy, buffer and digest
what is a lubrication? mucus lubricates the food and the lining of the tract; coats and protects the peithelial cells from mechanical abrasion; from the damagin effect of acid in the stomach; and from digestive enzymes of the digestive tract
where is mucus found? it is secreted along the entire digestive tract
what is used to liquefy? Water-from secretions; also osmosis
