Logical Fallacy
Review AP Lang
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| equivocation | using the same term with different meaning to be not clear. eg "They were entertaining guests." |
| non-sequitur (it does not follow) | the conclusion does not follow from the argument. Eg: "I behave in class so I should get a really good mark" |
| appeal for sympathy | ignores the real issue by emotional appeal |
| guilt (or innocence) by association | someone is guilty because of the people they are associated with. ex "Bob is a pirate, and since Rob is a friend of his, he must be a pirate too" |
| Post hoc ergo propter hoc ("after this, because of this") | attempts to show that a second event is caused by a first. "it always rains after I ski so I shouldn't ski" |
| begging the question (hypothesis contrary to fact) | assuming something to be true when it needs to be proved. |
| ignoring the question | ignoring the real issue by using distracting information that has no bearing. Apple when they are asked many questions. |
| faulty dilemma (either or fallacy) | all of the options are not taken into account in the solution posed by the major premise |
| ad hominem (appeal to the person) | Ignores the real issue by turning attention to an individual |
| Hasty generalization | without sufficient reasons, stereotypical |
| false analogy | using comparison in which the differences outweigh the similarities |
| non sequitur | a conclusion does not follow from the premise. eg "I am a good speakers so I would be a great mayor" |
