Cell Structure & Function

QuestionAnswer
What part of the cell regulates movement of molecules in and out of the cell? Cell membrane
What part of the cell provides a place for chemical reactions? Cell membrane
Where is the DNA of the cell found? Nucleus
What do we call the small organ-like structures inside the cell? Organelles
What do Cell Organelles do? Carry out the life functions of the cell.
When substances are transported across the cell membrane without any effort or work on the part of the cell, what is that called? Passive Transport
When the cell membrane pumps substances through the cell membrane to move it in or out of the cell, what is that called? Active Transport
Function of Nucleus? Stores DNA. The control center of the cell.
Function of Mitochondrion? Converts food to energy for the cell's use.
Function of Endoplasmic Reticulum or ER? Transport stubstances throughout cell.
Function of Golgi Apparatus? Packaging & distribution center of the cell.
Function of Lysosomes Vesicles which contain the cell's digestive enzymes.
Function of Vesicles? membrane enclosed sac within a cell used for storage.
Function of Cell Wall? Support & protection of a plant cell.
Function of Chloroplasts? Use light energy to produce food through Photosynthesis. Store Chlorophyll.
Active Transport? When a cell pumps substances into or out of the cell through the cell membrane.
Passive Transport? When substances naturally flow in and out of the cell through the cell membrane without action by the cell itself.
Proteins in the cell membrane? Help cell carry out life functions.
3 types of cell proteins? Marker Proteins, Receptor Proteins & Transport Proteins.
Function of Marker Proteins? Help cells recognize their cell type, for example - lung, heart, liver.
Function of Receptor Proteins? Attach to substances necessary for cell life.
Function of Transport Proteins? Help movement in and out and throughout the cell.
Cellular Organization? A characteristic of a living thing. All living things are made of cells.
Growth & Development? A characteristic of a living thing.Use energy to complete their life cycle.
Metabolism? A characteristic of a living thing.Turn food into energy & waste products.
Homeostasis? A characteristic of a living thing.Stable internal environment.
Responsiveness? A characteristic of a living thing.Respond to environment.
Reproduction? A characteristic of a living thing.Make more of their own kind.
Heredity? A characteristic of a living thing.Passing of characteristics to offspring.
Function of the Cell Membrane? Outer boundary of the cell.
Function of Cytoplasm? Living jelly-like interior of cell which holds cell organelles in place.
Function of Ribosomes? Produce Proteins.
Function of DNA? Instructions for or code of life.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
