Sympathomimetic bronchodilations Beta 2 dilators - dilate the airways, making air exchange and respiration easier, relax the smooth muscle of the bronchi - Provental/Albuterol. Xopenex, Serevent
Xanthine bronchodilators stimulate the central nervous system and respiration, dilate coronary and pulmonary vessels, cause diuresis, and relax smooth muscle – Aminophylline, Theophylline
Aminophylline relaxes sm. Muscle of resp sys – Xanthine bronchodilator - must examine blood levels to make sure they are therapeutic – 10-20 – SE dizziness, palpitations, tachycardia, dysrhythmias.
Theophylline bronchodilator – relaxes sm. Muscles of resp system - must examine blood levels to make sure they are therapeutic – 10-20 – SE dizziness, anxiety, restlessness, palpitations, tachycardia, dysrhythmias
Bronchodilators Side effects palpitations, tachycardia – so want to take their pulse BEFORE and AFTER we give the drug - pseudoephedrine might be in cough medicines so avoid OTC
Cough suppressant Either opioid or nonopioid - centrally or locally acting - Inhibit the cough response receptors in the cough center of the medulla in the brain, thereby suppressing a cough
Locally acting antitussive acts directly on the cough production at the site of irritation
Metered dose inhalers deliver a specific amount of medication at a given time - Shake the MDI before use, Hold upright and grasp with thumb and first 2 fingers, Open mouth, position inhaler 1 – 2 inches away from mouth, Patient exhale, then press down once on the inhaler to re
