What is militarism? glorification of war and increase in military spending
What is an alliance? a web or group of treaties among countries to protect themselves
What is imperialism? countries competing for land, resources, colonies
What is nationalism? great pride in one's country or aspring to become one's own country
What is the Triple Alliance? Germany, Austria,-Hungary, and Italy
What is the Triple Entente? France, Russia, and Great Britain
What was the "spark" that started WWI? The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Serbia.
What were the new weapons used in WWI? machine gun, poison gas bombs, flame throwers, tanks, airplane
What was trench warfare? Fighting the enemy from hand-dug trenches along the French border.
What was trench warfare like? charging over the top, crossing no man's land to reach the enemy, boring, terrifying, shellshock, horrible living conditions, diseases, boredom,not much progress on a daily or monthly basis.
What were the Fronts of the war? Western and Eastern Fronts
Describe war on the Western Front. Germany took France quickly. Battlelines formed along NE France; long, bloody battles; Battle of Verdun and Somme.
Describe the war on the Eastern Front. Russia defeated due to lack of technology. Russia withdrew from war. On the Balkans, Italy joined Triple Entente and defeated Ottoman Empire. Revolts within Germany and Austria-Hungary ended war by 1918.
When did the war end? November 11, 1918
What did the Paris Peace Conference finally give to everyone? Treaty of Versailles--Germany had to give land back to France; pay war reparations; agree to war guilt clause; demilitarize
