Character Vocabulary

| Short story | a brief work of fiction |
| Static character | a character that does not change much in the course of the story |
| Protagonist | main character in a fiction or drama. The character on which we focus our attention |
| Direct characterization | the author directly states what kind of person the character is: sneaky, honest, innocent, etc. |
| Dynamic character | a character that changes because of the story’s events |
| Flat character | a character that has only one or two traits and these can be described in a few words. These characters have no depth, like a piece of cardboard |
| Antagonist | the character or force that blocks the protagonist, often the villain of the story |
| Round character | similar to a real person, these characters have many different traits, which can sometimes contradict one another. |
| Indirect characterization | The reader has to use his/her judgment to decide what a character is like, based on the evidence the writer gives him/her |
| Character | person in a story, poem, or play – usually a regular human being |
