Slavery(Southeners) meant that no new slave states could be formed and the political power of the south would decrease
Missouri Compromise Missouri applied for admission to the Union as a slave state and Maine applied as a free state.

Jackson and his supporters saw that an anonyous letter to the nespapers charged that Clay was given the job as the result of a "corrupt bargain."
