Homeostasis All organisms encounter great fluctuations in their enviornments (change in temperatures, water, pH, ect) that cause them to struggle continuosly to maintain a steady state.
Plasma Membrane seperates the chemicals in the call from those in it's enviornment
Impermeable when a substance can not pass through
Permeable when a substance can pass through
Selectively Permeable the membrane allows some substances through, while others cannot
Passive Transport movement of a substance through a cell's membrane without using any energy
Diffusion a net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Equilibrium concentration of a substance is the same throughtout a space
Solute a substance that dissolves in another
Solvent the more plentiful substance that dissolves the solute
Solution the mixture of solutes and solvents
Osmosis the diffusion of water molecules through a membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Tonicity how the concentrations of solutes in 2 solutions compare
Isontonic solute concentration inside and outside cells is equal
Hypotonic Low in solutes, and water moves INTO cell
Hypertonic High in solutes, water moves OUT OF solutes
