Major Incidents

NHS Definition

A Major Incident is any event whose impact cannot be handled within routine service arrangements.

  • Command
  • Safety 1 2 3
  • Communication
  • Assessment
  • Triage
  • Treatment
  • Transport

M.E.T.H.A.N.E.

  • M - MAJOR Incident Declared (or Hospitals stand by)
  • E - EXACT location of the incident, with map references if possible.
  • T - The TYPE of inccident with brief details of types & numbers of Vehicles,Trains,Buildings etc
  • H - HAZZARDS present & Potential
  • A - ACCESS routes and suitable provisional rendezvous points (RVP's)
  • N - Approximate NUMBERS of Priority 1 2 & 3 Patients,dead & uninjured.
  • E - Emergency Services present & required (HEMS local authorities etc)

FIRST CREW ACTIONS

  1. Park as near to the scene as safety permits.
  2. Don HIGH Visability Clothing & Safety Helmit.
  3. Take a short time to REFLET on the Situation.
  4. Leave Blue Lights on to Signify CONTROL point untill arrival of DOV/DSOV/ECV
  5. Povide EOC with an initial visual report, confirming attendance of other emergency services. (M.E.T.H.A.N.E)
  6. Do not leave vehicle & where possible mantain a Communications link between your attendent & EOC.
  7. On arrival of additional resources, designate Bronze parking & Bronze TRIAGE Routes.
  8. Hold all staff at 1st Ambulance untill brifed by Silver Medic (your attendant).
  9. Ensure that all arriving staff are wearing high visibility Clothing, Safety Helmets & bring their triage packs to the Control Point (1st Ambulance)

  • Silver = Tactical
  • Bronze = Operations
