Digestive System:

Digestive Tract is made up of the Mouth (oral Cavity), Pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, Anus

Accessory structure of the Digestive System are the Teeth, tongue, Salivary glands, liver, gall bladder, Pancreas

Eating involves: Ingestion: Enter digestive tract through mouth

Mechanical Processing: Physical breakdown and mixing of food

Digestion: Chemical breakdown of food into molecules that can be absorbed

Secretion: Release of digestive enzymes (salvia, gastric juice, bile, etc)

Absoprtion: Movement of molecules across digestive epithelium

Excretion: Removal of indigestible waste products (defecation)

GI Tract is essentially one continuous tube (see diagram) Making up some layers are the:

Diaphragm- most superficial

Myeneteric nerve plexus

submucosal nerve plexus

Lumen

Serosa ( present only inferior to diaphragm)
