What was humanism? Focus on man and his individualism.
Who was the Renaissance Man? Leonoardo da Vinci. Man of many talents.
Who was a patron? Individual who supported the arts. Very rich.
Who was a Protestant? An individual who separated from the Catholic Church and had different views.
What were indulgences? Money paid by people to forgive their sins.
What was a heretic? A person who doubted the church's beliefs.
What does excommunicated mean? It means removed from the church.
What is the Inquisition? A church court set up to root out heresy.
What is anti-Semitism? It is an unfounded hatred of the Jewish people.
Who is Gutenberg? He invented the printing press.
Who was Shakespeare? English writer of poetry and prose such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet.
Who was Machiavelli? Italian philosopher who wrote a guide on how rulers should rule and keep power
Who was the Medici family? The patron family of Florence.
Who was Martin Luther? Wrote the 95 THESIS expressing his dislikes against the church
Who was King Henry the VIII? English king who broke away from the church and formed the Church of England
What was the impact of the Renaissance? Emphasis on human potential; emphasis on curiosity and learning; great intellectual discoveries
What factors led to Renaissance? Crusaders shared knowledge; invention of printing press; wealthy families and Church became patrons of arts; development of bookkeepin g and credit to allow merchants to prosper
What did Renaissance art look like? lifelike; 3-D; detailed; showed emotion and feelings
What is humanism? Person who studied classics.
What were the classics? The works of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
How did the Renaissance spread? Trade routes and printing press
What was the Reformation? It was the breaking of many people against the Church because of things the church did.
Who was one of the leaders of the Reformation? Martin Luther
Protestant Reformers promoted what? Bible as key source of relelation; salvation by faith alone; self-interpretation of the Bible
What happened to European monarchs?? Their kingdoms grew into nations.
