As HCO-3 (bicarbonate) is eliminated from the body, what happens to the pH of the plasma? pH decreases, as more base is eliminated acid will increase and pH will decrease
When the acid in the body increases, there are 3 major ways that the kidney tubules regulate the pH of body fluids activate
The three major ways that the kidney tubules regulate the pH of the body fluids Reapsorption of HCo3, generating hco-3 by the kidney tubule cells, secretion of H+
Renal mechanisms for acid/base control are the slowest, may take hours or days
Renal mechanisms for acid/base control allow for elimination of the ________ ________ from the body fixed acids
Fixed acids are Metabolic acids generated in the body that are elimated in the urine. Carbonic acid is not a fixed acid because it can be elimated via the lungs.

The kidneys combat acidosis by conserving (reabsorbing) HCO3- in the _____ PCT (proximal convoluted tubule)
The more co2 in the plasma as in the case of ______ ________ the faster it enters the cell respirtory acidosis
Conserving (reabsorbing) HCO3- CO2 arrives at the kidney tubule cell in the PCT from the filtrate, or plama, or from metabolic reactions within the cell.
With the PCT cell, co2 and h2o form h2co3
the h2co3 splits into h+ and and bicoarbonate
the H+ moves into the filtrate in exchange for Na+ thru a na+/H+ antiport system
Antiport transport protein A membrane-bound protein that will transport one substance in one direction in exchange for another specific substance moved in the other direction.
