State of temporary but ACUTE mental confusion, abrupt onset, disturbed thinking, memory, attention, and perception, ALWAYS secondary to existing problem, possibly preventable. Delirium
Progressive deterioration in intellectual fucntioning, memory, and ability to solve problems and learn new skills, impaired judgement, chronic syndrome, not a normal part of aging. Dementia
Alzheimers and Vascular dementia are two types of this category of dementia. Progressive not reversible. Primary
Must score 26-30 on this to be normal, 22-25 means mild impairment, and <22 means significant impairment Mini Mental State Exam
Destruction of brain cells, Age is most imp risk factor, caused by cerebral atrophy, amyloid paques, neurofibrillary tangles, loss of connections between cells and cell death. Diagnosis isnt definite until autopsy. Alzheimer's Disease
What stage of Alzheimer's has an initial sign of forgetfulness, usually noticed by family 1st, patient will often notice problem. Stage 1
What stage of Alzheimer's has confusion and progressive memory loss, withdrawn from social activities, denial is common, confabulation, needs assistance at home. Stage 2
What stage of Alzheimer's is ambulatory dementia, wandering, ADL loss/incontinence, loss of safety planning, difficulty communicating, needs repeated instructions to perform simple tasks, high safety risk (fires) Stage 3
What stage of Alzheimer's pregresses to coma/death, is characterized by agraphia (unable to communicate), hyperorality (babbling/constant no sense), Hyeprmetamorphosis (rapid change/no communication) Stage 4
Disease of basal ganglia, cause is unknown, no cure only Tx Parkinsons Disease
