IVs: When problems arise...
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Step 1 | Recalculate teh drip rate according to the remaining time & volume. |
Step 2 | If fluid infused too slowly, see if pt can tolerate an increased rate by checking their cardiac & respiratory status. (looking for hx of renal insufficiency, pulmonary edema, or any other condition that increases risk of fluid overload.) |
Step 3 | If IV infused too quickly look for signs of fluid overload, (crackles & increased BP). |
Step 4 | Call dr. if these occur. |
Step 5 | May need an infusion pump instead of manual or controller regulation. |
Step 6 | As allowed by hospital policy, flow rate per minute can be adjusted by up to 25% more or less than the original rate. |
Step 7 | If more than 25% is needed to make up, DO NOT DO IT!!! |
Step 8 | Take the original flow rate & find out what 25% of it is. |
Step 9 | Calculate the new flow rate according to the remaining time and volume |
Step 10 | Determine whether the new flow rate is within 25%. |
