Compensation Covering up a real weakness by emphazing a trait one considers more desirable. Person is poor at athletics, but excells in acedemics.
Conversion The unconscious expression of intrapsychic conflict symbolically through physical symptoms. Ex.1)Pt is discharged & raped, so when she comes back, she drags her leg behind her when she walks. She is expressing her inner-conflict w/physical symptoms. Ex.2)Husband becomes impotent when his wife finds out he is having an affair.
Denial Refusing to acknowledge the existence of a real situation or the feelings associated with it. (The simplest & most primitive of all defense mechanisms.) Most common among substance abusers.
Displacement The transfer of feelings from one target to another that is considered less threatening. Punching a wall bc you are upset at your boss. *Usually involves taking it out on another person.
Dissociation Dealing with emotional conflict by a temporary alteration in consciousness or identity. A chilid is being abused, but thinks of a pleasant thing during the act.
Fixation Immobilization of a portion of the personality resulting from unsuccessful completion of tasks in a developmental stage. A substance abuser uses drugs at 11 years old, has the drugs taken away at age 33, & he begins to act like an 11 year old, by throwing a temper tantrem.
Identification An attempt to increase self worth by acquiring certain attributes and characteristics of an individual one admires. Boy in accident wants to be a therapist b/c of experiecnes; *Dressing like someone else to become like them.
Intellectualization An attempt to avoid expressing actual emotions associated with a stressful situation by using the intellectual processes of logic, reasoning, and analysis. Pt tries to rationalize everything. Ex. Pt says his sons death has meaning & Pt shows no emtions or grief; *Hardest defense mechanism to deal w/bc they never express true feelings.
Introjection Integrating the beliefs and values of another individual into one’s own ego structure. Integrate their parents value system into the process of conscience formation - don't cheat, it's wrong.
Isolation Separating a thought or memory from the feeling tone or emotion associated with it. A young woman describes being attacked & raped without showing emotion; *They are detached.
Projection Attributing feelings or impulses unacceptable to one’s self to another person. Ex.1)A strong sexual attration for teacher and she says 'he's coming on to me';Ex.2)"I know that girl is a lesbian. I can tell by looking at her."
Rationalizations Attempting to make excuses or formulate logical reasons to justify unacceptable feelings or behaviors. "I would have done better if I had more time to study, but something came up."
Reaction Formation Preventing unacceptable or undesirable thoughts or behaviors from being expressed by exaggerating opposite thoughts or types of behavior. You feel it is unacceptable so you show you love it when you hate it.
Regression Responding to stress by retreating to an earlier level of development and the comfort measures associated with that level of functioning. (blank)
Repression Involuntarily blocking unpleasant feelings and experiences from one’s awareness. A woman who was abused has no memory of bein 10 years old or younger.
Resistance Overt or covert antagonism toward remembering or processing anxiety-producing information. (blank)
Sublimation Rechanneling of drives or impulses that are personally or socially unacceptable into activities that are constructive. A mother whose child was killed by a drunk driver joins MADD.
Substitution Replacing the desired gratification with on that is more readily available. A woman who want her own kids, but cannot opens a daycare center.
Suppression The voluntary blocking of unpleasant feelings and experiences from one’s awareness. "I'm not going to thik about that now. I'll think about it tomorrow."
Undoing The voluntary blocking of unpleasant feelings and experiences from one’s awareness. A man who is having an affair brings his wife flowers after work.
Subjective Burden The grief, fear, guilt, anger, & other negative emotions that family members experience in response to a loved one's mental illness. (blank)
