Bacteriuria most common nosocomial infction, associataed with use of urinary catheters,
gram negative microorganisms E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, or Pseudomonas, infecting the urinary tract via the urinary meatus, normally flushing of urine functionally clears bacteria before infection begins
UTI is also caused by gram positive microorganisms and yeast, why is UTI common in older pts? older patients experience bladder obstruction, insufficient bladder emptying, increased perineal soiling in females, Immobil9ity and sensory impairmentf
what are conditions contributing to urinary stasis? urinary obstruction, neurogenic bladder, ureteral or urethral reflux, sexual intercourse
other factors allowing the concentration of bacteria? HTN, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, Diabetes Mellitus,
increased risk of UTI in LUTI especially if left what? if left untreated
s/s of UTI urgency, freq burning with urination, dysuria, hematuria,
urethritis common in men, classified by the presence or absence of gonorrhea, otherwise called nonspecific urethritis if not caused by gonorrea (NSU)-commonly caused by chlamydia trachmatis
female causes of urethritis accompanies cystitis in women, secondary to vaginal trichomonal or monoilial infections
male causes of urethritis irritation of urethra during vigorous intercourse, rectal or vaginal intercourse with a female with trichomonal or monoilial infection, instrumentation,, catherterization, or cystoscopy
gonorrhea attacks the mucous membrane of the urethra
s/s of gonorrhea dysuria, tickling to burning, urinary freq, urethral pruitis, urethral discharge, vulvar irritation, in males fever implies infection to prostate, testes, and epididymitis
