monoclonal antibodies and how they work? recruit pts immume system to produce cytokines or lymphocytes -which help kill cancer cells.It binds with growth factors or block growth receptors- which cancer cells need to divide. It delivers chemo or radiation to targeted cells.
Monoclonal antibody medications? Bevacizumab (Avastin)
Bevacizumab (Avastin) use and indications -targets and inhibits VEGF receptor secreted by tumor. -used in metastatic colon cancer, metastatic non-squamous, or non-small cell lung cancer.
tyrosine kinase inhibitors and how they work? interferes with intracellular signaling, growth, proliferation, metastasis, and other processes.
tyrosine kinase inhibitors medications? Imatinib (Gleevec)
Imatinib (Gleevec)use and indications? -acts on genes and inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in cancer cells -used in CML and metastatic GI stromal cancer
Bevacizumab (Avastin) side effects? hypertension, hemorrhage, Arterial thromboembolic event, GI perforation, wound dehiscence, nephritic sydrome, and heart failure.
Imatinib (Gleevec) side effects? edema N/V diarrhea, rash bone marrow depression pt should weigh self daily. 2 lb/wk call hcp
typical adverse reactions of targeted cancer therapies? Rash Diarrhea infusion reactions hypertension mouth problems bone marrow depression bleeding
care of Rash side effect? gently cleanse, no product that dry skin. dont pick. avoid sun exposure.
care of diarrhea side effect? Tkae antidiarrheals, drink plenty fluids no caffeine or alcohol. reduce fiber
care of infusion reaction side effect? closley monitor during and after therapy. stop drug and have 0.9% sodium chloride ready to control symptoms
care of hypertension side effect? monitor BP before, during, and after infusion and frequently during weeks and months of being on it. may need to stop if uncontrolled
