What are sulfonamides used to treat? Acute and chronic urinary tract infections, cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis.
What organisms are treated with sulfonamides? Streptococcus, Bacilis anthracis, chlamydia,ulcerative colitis
What are the adverse reactions of Sulfonamides Headache, drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, insomnia, peripheral neuropathy, hypothyroidism, hypoglucemia, anorexia, naysea, vomiting, stomatitis, abdominal pain, blood dyscrasias, rash, fever, pruritus, perioribital edema
What are drug interactions of sulfonamides Oral anticoagulants, methotrexate, sylfonylureas, thiazide diuretics, phenytoin, and uricosuric agents, PENICILLINS (less effective)
When should sulfonamide be d/c If urinary output is reduced or if a rash develops.
What should patients on sulfonamides do? Drink lots of water to avoid crystals, and avoid sun
Can sulfonamides be given with food? Yes-their absorption will be delayed by not reduced. Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals with a full glass of water
What tests should be done before starting sulfonamides CBC, UA, liver/kidney function tests, and once every month if on prolonged therapy.
When should the patient on sulfonamides contact the perscriber If no improvement of symptoms withing 2-3 days after beginning therapy
What are the names of Sulfonamides Sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole, sulfasalazine, sulfonamide combination vaginal product
