Question | Answer |
---|---|
Na | 136-145 meq/l |
Cl | 90-110 meq/l |
Potassium | 3.5-5 meq/l |
BUN | 10-20 mg/dl |
Creatinine (Women) | 0.5-1.1 mg/dl |
Creatinine (Men) | 0.6-1.2 mg/dl |
Critical BUN | >100 mg/dl |
Critical Creatinine | >4 mg/dl |
two substances not reabsorbed by the kidneys | BUN and Creatinine |
What is the BUN? | Blood urea nitrogen. Urea=product of protein metabolism usually excreted by the kidneys. Increased values could indicate renal function abnormalities. |
What can increased blood levels of BUN signify? | azotemia, uremia, renal dx, decreased reanal blood flow, high PRO diet, starvation-->fat stores used up; breaking down protein. |
What is Creatinine? | catabolic product of creatine phosphatase-->skeletal muscle contraction. Normally excreted by the kidneys |
Creatinine reliable b/c | muscle mass of person fluctuates very little: Directly proportional to GFR |
What is Glomerular filtration | process in which fluid and solutes move from blood in the glomerulus into Bowman's capsule. |
What is GFR? | Glomurular Filtration Rate: amount of fluid filtered from the blood into Bowman's per minute. 125ml/min. |
Primary factors controlling GFR | Blood pressure and blood volume |
